When you step onto the mats at Gracie Barra New Mexico to transition from the traditional kimono to no-gi, you quickly realize that the friction you relied on is gone. You can’t just grab a lapel or a sleeve to slow things down. It changes the physics of the fight entirely. To thrive in this environment, you have to prioritize techniques that rely on anatomical handles rather than fabric.

If you ask anyone who spends their nights rolling in Albuquerque, they will tell you that the front headlock is the king of no-gi positions. Because people are sweatier and harder to hold, they often try to wrestle up or turtle to avoid being pinned. This is where the chin strap becomes your best friend.

By securing the chin and the back of the triceps, you control the opponent’s posture. From here, the transition into a high elbow guillotine or an anaconda choke is seamless. It is a persuasive way to dictate the pace of the match because your opponent is constantly worried about their neck being exposed while they try to move.

In the traditional gi game, you might spend a lot of time playing spider guard or lasso, but in no-gi, those options vanish. You have to get comfortable with leg entanglements. At Gracie Barra New Mexico, the focus is often on using the legs to create dilemmas.

The inside sankaku or the 411 position is vital. Even if you aren’t hunting for heel hooks, controlling the hips through the legs is the most effective way to keep a fast opponent from simply running around your guard. It turns the fight into a tactical battle of lever control where you are using your strongest limbs against their isolated leg. Without a collar grip to keep someone at bay, the underhook becomes the most important piece of real estate on the mat. Whether you are playing top or bottom, winning the underhook battle usually determines who wins the round.

From the bottom half guard, an underhook allows you to get to your dog fight position and sweep. On top, a heavy underhook is what kills your opponent’s ability to turn into you, effectively flattening them out for a heavy pressure pass. It is a simple concept, but mastering the nuances of how to dig that arm in and keep your shoulder tight to their chest is what separates the blue belts from the black belts. While fancy footlocks get a lot of attention, the rear naked choke remains the gold standard. In a high energy no-gi scramble, taking the back is the ultimate goal because it offers the highest degree of control with the lowest risk of reversal.

The beauty of the rear naked choke is that it doesn’t require a grip on clothing. It is pure body mechanics. You are using your own biceps and the crook of your elbow to close the carotid arteries. If you can get your hooks in and flatten an opponent out, there is very little they can do to escape regardless of how much they sweat.

Focusing on these areas creates a game that doesn’t rely on luck or athleticism. It builds a system of control that works whether you are in a humid gym in the middle of summer or competing under the bright lights.
