Training in martial arts, specifically Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) at a facility such as Gracie Barra New Mexico, involves adherence to a clear set of conduct standards.
These rules ensure a consistent, safe, and respectful environment for all students and instructors.
Required personal and uniform standards!
The foundation of training etiquette rests on maintaining strict personal and uniform cleanliness. Students must ensure their training uniform, or Gi, is washed after every single training session. A clean uniform is a mandatory requirement. Similarly, all students must prioritize personal hygiene, including showering before class and using deodorant. Fingernails and toenails must be kept short to prevent accidental scratches or injuries to training partners during close-contact grappling. All jewelry, piercings, and other metal objects must be removed prior to stepping onto the mat for safety reasons. For the training area itself, no shoes, food, or drinks are permitted on the mat surface.

Conduct during the class session!
Respectful behavior is necessary during all training activities. When the instructor is speaking or demonstrating a technique, students must maintain silence and give their full attention. Side conversations or other distracting actions hinder the learning process for everyone present and show a lack of respect for the instruction. If a student arrives late to class, they must wait at the edge of the training area until the instructor gives explicit permission to join the session. If a student must leave the mat or exit the class early, they are expected to ask the instructor for permission beforehand. Furthermore, students should always address black-belt instructors using the proper title, typically “Professor,” as a sign of respect for their rank and experience.
Interaction with partners and safety!
Training safety is a shared responsibility among all participants. Students must treat their training partners with respect, being mindful of differences in size, skill, and experience level. During sparring, control must be prioritized over excessive force. The “tap” is the universal signal to stop a technique, and it must be acknowledged immediately and without exception to prevent injury. Following the established safety protocols and showing consideration for all partners maintains a productive and injury-free training atmosphere. This consistent application of conduct standards is integral to the training structure at Gracie Barra New Mexico.
